My Solo Piece

Last week we were told to prepare a piece of theatre based on WW1 either individually or in a pair that should last 1 to 2 minutes. We were also advised to minimise dialogue and make it more of an abstract, physical piece.

I chose to theme my scene around the idea of those young men forgotten in the war., The millions of boys who were ordered to their deaths by their superiors for the sake of a few feet of land. The millions who would be left nothing but blank stone or a poppy in the field.

To this end I chose for my scene to embody the predicament of these people using my physicality and staging. The main way in which I tried to represent the forgotten dead was to minimise my stage presence, I did this by sitting hunched on the floor and reducing the weight with which I sat, making myself seem smaller, weaker and generally lower status.

I chose to display my dialogue on large cue cards facing the audience in order to mimic the actions of many homeless people so as to represent those left by the wayside in the past with a modern life example.

Overall I think that my piece was effective in conveying the moral message I was trying to send but as a piece of theatre I feel it would have been more effective with some kind of emotive instrumental track to make it more entertaining.
